loading the graohics module after boot?

Robert Huff

Thanks to the nice folks on current@ I now have a system running:

FreeBSD 13.0-ALPHA1 #1 main-c1149-g79a5c790bd: Sat Jan 16 09:02:47 EST 2021 amd64

It's now in its 11th hour of (multi-user) uptime and kldstat
shows:

Id Refs Address                Size Name
 1   71 0xffffffff80200000  1abc640 kernel
 2    2 0xffffffff81cbe000    176a8 libalias.ko
 3    1 0xffffffff81cd6000     b300 cuse.ko
 4    2 0xffffffff81ce2000    4ebd8 ipfw.ko
 5    1 0xffffffff81d31000     8b78 ipfw_nat.ko
 6    1 0xffffffff81f20000     639c linprocfs.ko
 7    4 0xffffffff81f27000     db70 linux_common.ko
 8    1 0xffffffff81f35000     3378 acpi_wmi.ko
 9    1 0xffffffff81f39000     3218 intpm.ko
10    1 0xffffffff81f3d000     2180 smbus.ko
11    1 0xffffffff81f40000     2340 uhid.ko
12    1 0xffffffff81f43000     2380 usbhid.ko
13    1 0xffffffff81f46000     31f8 hidbus.ko
14    1 0xffffffff81f4a000     3320 wmt.ko
15    1 0xffffffff81f4e000     4350 ums.ko
16    1 0xffffffff81f53000     e538 snd_uaudio.ko
17    1 0xffffffff81f62000    378f8 linux.ko
18    1 0xffffffff81f9a000    30ac8 linux64.ko
19    1 0xffffffff81fcb000     2260 pty.ko
20    1 0xffffffff81fce000     3284 linsysfs.ko
21    1 0xffffffff81fd2000     3520 fdescfs.ko

Note the absence of any of the drm kmods.
If I should now load (e.g.) i915kms.ko ... and assuming
everything else is working properly ... is there any reason to expect
the system to misbehave up to and including crashing?

                        Respectfully,

                                Robert Huff

For fun, you might try simply:

kldload drm

(I have something like this as a workaround to an issue with non-Intel
graphics.)
